Disgaea

Disgaea is a tactical role-playing game franchise from developer Nippon Ichi. The first title, *Disgaea: Hour of Darkness*, launched in Japan on January 30, 2003, and later saw re-releases as *Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness* and *Disgaea DS*. It is one of the company’s most successful series, expanding into manga and anime adaptations. The games are recognized for their deep strategic systems, absurdly high stat ceilings, and comedic writing. By 2021, the series had sold 5 million copies worldwide.

**Gameplay** Each game is structured around missions accessed from a central hub. There, players manage equipment, heal their party, and recruit or create new characters. Missions take place on isometric, grid-based maps with varied elevations. Turns alternate between the player and the computer. On a player’s turn, up to ten party members can be summoned from a starting point. Each character can move and then perform an action—such as a melee attack or special ability—though attacking before moving is also allowed. The player can queue actions for multiple characters and then execute them all at once. After all eligible characters have acted, the turn ends and the computer moves its forces.

Completing a mission’s objective—usually defeating all enemies—earns bonus items based on a score accumulated through combo attacks, special moves, and other feats. Allies positioned next to each other can trigger combo attacks, dealing extra damage and boosting the score. Characters can lift and throw other characters or objects. Throwing a character can extend their movement range, and certain monsters called Prinnies explode when thrown. A character carrying another can be picked up by a third, allowing a single unit to cross the map in one turn, though carried characters take damage if still held at turn’s end. While holding others, a character can attack, and each held character adds to the damage.

Maps often feature colored panels (red, green, blue, yellow, purple, or cyan) and Geo Symbols (colored objects that affect the same colors). A Geo Symbol placed on a matching panel applies a bonus or penalty to all units on that color, and effects stack if multiple symbols share a panel.
