It was released for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 on January 28, 2021, in Japan, and by Sega on May 27, 2021, in Asia. The Nintendo Switch version launched worldwide on June 29, 2021 in North America, July 2, 2021 in Europe, and July 9, 2021 in Australia. The game is notable for introducing 3D graphics to the series for the first time and for featuring extremely high numerical values for character levels and damage output.

The game follows Zed, a zombie who seeks to defeat the God of Destruction terrorizing the Netherworld. Zed possesses the power of Super Reincarnation, allowing him to be reborn each time he dies, growing stronger with each cycle. He has died tens of thousands of times, and his journey takes him through multiple worlds where he meets companions including Misedor, Melodia, Piyori, and Majolene. The story is framed by Zed recounting his adventures to Overlord Ivar and the Dark Assembly.
