Disgaea: Hour of Darkness

A tactical RPG about a demon prince reclaiming his throne.

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is a tactical role-playing game for the PlayStation 2, created by Nippon Ichi Software. Its story takes place in a realm populated by demons and angels, centering on Laharl, the son of a demon overlord. After waking from a two-year sleep, he sets out to claim his father’s throne while battling other demons who challenge him.

Nippon Ichi has produced a range of Disgaea merchandise, including a manga. A sequel, Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories, arrived on the PlayStation 2 in 2006, along with a 12-episode anime adaptation titled Makai Senki Disgaea. A PlayStation Portable version, Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness, and a Windows port, Disgaea PC, were also released. An HD remake, Disgaea 1 Complete, came out for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, and later for iOS and Android. In 2004, the game received a spiritual sequel, Phantom Brave. Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness, released for PlayStation 3 in 2013, features the original main cast plus new characters.

**Gameplay** Combat in Disgaea takes place on a square-grid map. Players control a squad of humanoid units and monsters, each occupying one grid square, and fight against enemy groups. Depending on the character and chosen attack, damage can be dealt to a single enemy or to a specific area of the map. The battle ends when either all enemies or all player units are defeated.

Humanoid characters can lift and throw other units across the map, allowing allies to move farther or forcing enemies to keep their distance. This also enables capturing enemies by tossing them into the base panel; captured enemies become allies usable in later maps. The chance of capture depends on several factors. If the attempt fails, all characters inside the base panel die, and the enemy survives.

**Geo Panels** Some maps feature Geo Panels—colored squares on the floor—along with Geo Symbols, which are colored objects that can usually be thrown. When a Geo Symbol sits on a Geo Panel of the same color, it grants a property to all panels of that color, such as making units invulnerable or reducing friendly units’ HP by 20% each turn. If a Geo Symbol is destroyed on a panel of a different color, those panels change to the symbol’s color and damage units on them. If another Geo Symbol is on a panel during this change, it is also destroyed, triggering a chain reaction that changes colors and properties again. The cha

Lore & Background

The game's story opens with Laharl rising from an open coffin in his castle. Etna, a vassal, explains he has slept for two years and his father King Krichevskoy has died. Laharl vows to reclaim the throne, defeating the demon Vyers (renamed 'Mid-Boss') and meeting Angel Trainee Flonne, who was sent to assassinate the already-dead king. Flonne joins Laharl to determine if demons can feel love, while Archangel Vulcanus suspects her of treason. Later, after defeating Hoggmeiser at Dinero Palace, Laharl spares him due to Flonne's intervention, and Hoggmeiser joins the party. A photograph of Laharl in an embarrassing situation is discovered but its contents are never revealed.

Reader's Guide

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is significant for its deep tactical gameplay and innovative systems. The battle system uses a square grid where humanoid and monster units occupy single squares, with attacks affecting specific enemies or regions. Unique mechanics include lifting and throwing units to capture enemies by throwing them into the base panel, with capture chance depending on several factors. Geo Panels add strategic depth: colored squares with Geo Symbols grant properties like invulnerability or HP reduction; destroying symbols on different-colored panels triggers chain reactions that fill a bonus gauge. Removing all Geo Panels causes a blast harming enemies and granting a Panel Termination Bonus. The hub, Laharl's castle, provides access to maps, shops (Rosen Queen Co.), a hospital, and the Dark Assembly, where proposals require mana and senator votes (bribable or forceable). The Item World allows entering items to increase attributes via randomly generated levels, specialists, and item bosses. The game spawned a sequel, a PSP port (Afternoon of Darkness), a Windows port (Disgaea PC), an HD remake (Disgaea 1 Complete), and a spiritual sequel (Phantom Brave).
